What our analysis found
Wifi Speed Test, used by 10,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in October 2023.
Analyst notes
The extension performs exactly its stated purpose: a speed test popup that sends randomised byte payloads to publisher-owned servers (speed-{usa,germany,london,singapore}.[domain withheld]) and displays results — the POST requests, large JS size, and innerHTML hits that drove the ML score are all direct artefacts of the speed-test implementation in. The bundled manifest declares zero permissions (no host_permissions, no tabs, no webRequest), severely limiting the extension's attack surface; the background script () does nothing beyond setting redirect URLs on [domain withheld] (publisher-owned domain). The only notable discrepancy is the live CWS listing showing manifest_version 3 while the 955-day-old bundled ZIP is manifest_version 2 — this is consistent with the publisher having migrated newer versions to MV3 since this version was published, not a malicious swap. Third-party chrome-stats scores impact and likelihood, corroborating the benign read; publisher's 11% malicious portfolio is a mild flag but the individual extension's code shows no harvesting, obfuscation, or exfiltration behaviour.
