What our analysis found

Stranger Things Wallpaper, used by 2,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. Our code review reported 1 finding (1 medium), led by remote code loading. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in May 2025.

    Remote Code Loading

Every new tab fetches a server-controlled HTML string from the publisher's API and assigns it directly to innerHTML inside the newtab override page. MV3's default script-src 'self' applies (the manifest declares no CSP override), so injected <script>, inline handlers and javascript: URLs will not execute and the markup gets no chrome.* access, but frame-src is unrestricted, so the publisher can render arbitrary iframes, forms, ads or links into a browser-chrome-adjacent surface and change that payload at any time without shipping an update. It is logged as a standing remote-content channel rather than proof of malice: the endpoint is plainly named, the payload is unobfuscated JSON, and the extension adds a close button.

Analyst notes

This is an ordinary new-tab wallpaper extension: renders a clock, a search box backed by chrome.search.query (:93, which uses the user's own default engine and performs no redirect to a publisher search page), five bundled JPEGs, and localStorage shortcuts. There is no exfiltration anywhere in the bundle, no access, and the bundled manifest (permissions [search], host_permissions [[domain withheld]]) matches the published CWS manifest exactly. The one genuine concern is:41-54, which innerHTMLs a server-supplied HTML blob from the publisher's own API into the new-tab page on every load; MV3's default script-src 'self' (no CSP override in the manifest) blocks injected script, inline handlers and javascript: URLs, so it is an channel rather than code execution, and:10-29 does the same lower-severity thing by overwriting the user's stored shortcuts from. The chrome-stats score () and our Risk Engine agree with this read but are only context; the malext-feed internal note contradicts it, yet that note self-describes as a bulk import that is "not an independent code review", supplies no affected version and no code basis. The 33% permhash cluster is weak here because [search] plus a single first-party host is the shape of every mass-produced new-tab template, and this publisher alone ships 1,388 extensions. Confidence is medium rather than high because jQuery 3.7.1 and the two server payloads are outside the extracted bundle, not because of any pattern in the code I read.
