What our analysis found
Nissan Skyline Live Wallpaper New Tab, used by 5,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in August 2026.
Every line of the 12 shipped JS files, and the manifest was read: there is no outbound transmission of any kind — all three network calls (:49:35:17) are inbound GETs with no query string, no body and no identifiers, so nothing about the user leaves the browser; there are no content scripts, no APIs, and search goes through chrome.search.query (:219) which honours the user's own default engine rather than hijacking it. The bundled manifest matches the published CWS manifest exactly (manifest_version 3, permissions ['search'], host_permissions [' ']), and all remote destinations are the publisher's own domain, consistent with the Art & Design live-wallpaper new-tab purpose. Contradicting signals: the permhash cluster (33% flagged) and the publisher aggregate ( malicious) are circular — this extension's own malware label is an imported third-party feed whose stated basis is explicitly 'not an independent code review', and that same feed very likely produced the publisher-wide count; chrome-stats (impact, trusted-publisher) and our own risk engine (0.10) agree with the code. I stop at likely_benign rather than false_positive for two reasons the code cannot settle: is listed in and loaded on every new tab (:17) but was not included in the bundle, so a trojanised copy of it cannot be ruled out; and:51 renders publisher-controlled HTML fetched at runtime into the new-tab page (MV3 CSP blocks script execution there, so this is a channel, not code execution) while: renders publisher-controlled shortcut tiles — both are delayed-update levers that a future server-side change could turn into ad injection or phishing links without a CWS review.
