What our analysis found
Anime Cursor - Custom Cursor for Chrome™ - All in One Anime…, used by 40,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. Its permissions mean it can read and change data on all websites and can inject scripts into pages. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in August 2026.
Analyst notes
Every file in the bundle does exactly what an anime-cursor extension needs: and GET a static cursor catalogue from the publisher's own [domain withheld] (author is [domain withheld],), rasterise the chosen cursor to a data: URL, and:88-94 writes a single <style> element with a cursor rule into each page. There is no outbound POST, no anywhere in the 310 KB React popup bundle, no reading of page contents, cookies, history, forms or keystrokes, and no remote code loading; chrome.scripting is used only at:65 to inject the packaged file into already-open tabs on install, skipping CWS pages. Contradicting signals: the permhash cluster (7% malicious) and the malext-feed note are weak here, since the feed entry itself states it is a bulk import with no independent review and no affected version, and the scores are driven purely by the *://*/* + scripting manifest that a global cursor override legitimately requires. Two things I cannot close out from this bundle keep me at likely_benign rather than false_positive::15-16 stores the remote JSON's cursor_url verbatim (:44 accepts), so the publisher's server, not the package, decides whether every visited page fetches a remote image, and the live listing declares an extra unlimitedStorage permission absent from this 1.0.5 manifest, meaning the shipping build differs slightly from what I read (the added permission is low-risk and consistent with caching large data-URL cursor images, and no permission was broadened).
