What our analysis found
iCloud Bookmarks, used by 7,000,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. It comes from a publisher with 9 extensions and was last updated in November 2023.
The extension is a legitimate bookmark sync tool from Apple using nativeMessaging to communicate with iCloud for Windows. The code does not exfiltrate data to any remote server; all bookmark data stays local. The risk-engine flagged nativeMessaging, tabs, and storage permissions as, but these are required for the extension's stated purpose. The CWS listing discloses 'Web history' data collection, which aligns with bookmark syncing. A manifest version mismatch (MV2 vs MV3) and permissions discrepancy (tabs missing in published listing) exist but are non-malicious hygiene issues. Publisher reputation is excellent, and third-party risk score is low.
