What our analysis found
Hello Kitty Live Wallpaper, used by 7,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in November 2025.
Every file in the published package is accounted for: the three first-party scripts and implement exactly the advertised new-tab wallpaper (clock at:48, shortcuts at, default-engine search via chrome.search.query at, sticky notes at), and the only remaining JS,, is byte-identical to the official 3.7.1 release (its verified_contents tree hash _Yxbe0Cs7YXTBT7WZ_ reproduces exactly from the CDN copy), so there is no unreviewed code. No user data ever leaves the browser: the only outbound calls are parameter-less GETs to the publisher's own for a shortcut list and a notification banner, plus static UTM URLs, with no content scripts, no access and no telemetry. The 'malicious' signals are not independent of each other: the ML score, the internal note and the publisher's 62% rate all trace to the 2026-09-13 malext feed import whose own basis states it is 'not an independent code review', and the bundled manifest matches the published manifest exactly. Residual non-finding risk worth noting::54 writes server-supplied HTML into the extension's own page with innerHTML, and:21 lets the server populate shortcut hrefs, giving the publisher a first-party content channel outside CWS review; MV3's default script-src 'self' (no CSP override in the manifest) blocks script tags, inline handlers and javascript: URLs there, so it is an surface rather than code execution, and this version ships no abusive payload.
