What our analysis found
Grass Lite Node, used by 1,000,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. Its permissions mean it can read and change data on all websites and can observe network requests. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in September 2026.
The extension functions as a bandwidth‑sharing node: it opens a WebSocket to a director server, receives proxy requests, and forwards them via fetch. All network destinations (,) are first‑party under the publisher’s domain. The webRequest and declarativeNetRequest permissions are used only to manage extension‑initiated proxy traffic, not to intercept user browsing. No unauthorized data collection, code injection, or covert exfiltration was found. The ML model likely over‑fitted on the broad <all_urls> and webRequest permissions that are necessary for a proxy node.
