What our analysis found
EndNote Click, used by 6,000,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. Its permissions mean it can read and change data on all websites. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in May 2025.
The extension is a legitimate academic research tool by Clarivate (EndNote). The source code examined shows no malicious behavior: the content script bridge () safely forwards messages only from the extension's own domains. The reveals analytics endpoints (,) that are Clarivate-owned and consistent with the disclosed data collection practices. The contains publisher URL patterns used for PDF access, matching the extension's purpose. The main background and content scripts are not included in the provided bundle, but the available files and metadata (trusted publisher, 5M+ users, age, category) corroborate a benign verdict. The risk-engine security analysis flagged permissions (declarativeNetRequest, webNavigation, <all_urls>) as critical, but these are necessary for the extension's functionality of detecting publisher pages and fetching full-text PDFs. No evidence of data exfiltration, code injection, or unauthorized collection was found.
