What our analysis found
Bibcitation Bibliography & Citation Generator, used by 40,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. Its permissions mean it can inject scripts into pages. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in May 2023.
Analyst notes
The extension’s source code shows it is a legitimate citation generator. All permissions (tabs, storage, webNavigation, scripting, activeTab) are used exclusively for scraping the current page’s metadata to create citations – no unauthorized data collection or exfiltration. are disclosed as ‘User activity’. The ML model’s critical risk is a false positive driven by these permissions and minified bundle heuristics (high base64, hex counts from inlined SVGs and fonts). The third-party risk score (impact=2, likelihood=0) and publisher reputation (trusted, featured, valid email) strongly corroborate benign intent.
