What our analysis found
Search for a Cause, used by 10,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in August 2022.
Analyst notes
The entire extension is a 2,013-byte webpack bundle () that declares `"permissions": []`, has no content scripts, no, no storage and no host permissions; its only behaviours are `setUninstallURL` (line 81), opening a tab on browser-action click (line 89), and a `chrome_settings_overrides.search_provider` pointing at `[domain withheld]}` — all first-party to the publisher's privacy-policy domain and exactly the charity-search product described in the listing. The ML score of 0.85 and the malext-feed 'malware' note are contradicted by the code: the feed's own basis states it is 'not an independent code review' with 'No affected version supplied', and it appears to flag any search_provider override as hijacking, while publisher reputation ( malicious, Google trusted badge), chrome-stats and our risk engine all corroborate benignity. Note version skew: the reviewed bundle is v0.7 (MV2, ~4 years old) while the live listing reports manifest_version 3, so the current CWS build was not part of this review — neither side declares any permissions, so this is skew, not a permission mismatch.
