What our analysis found
Montara Chrome Extension, used by 639,000,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in August 2025.
The extension is a legitimate Snowflake IDE productivity tool built by (a trusted publisher with badge). All code is readable, unminified, and clearly purposeful: injects a SQL model autocomplete dropdown triggered by '@@' into Snowflake IDE pages, communicates with an iframe at via postMessage to retrieve catalog data, and uses chrome.storage.local exclusively to persist a user-supplied API token. The bundled manifest exactly matches the published CWS manifest — same permissions (storage), same host_permissions (,). The ML score of 0.00 is itself low; the ML regex hits (innerHTML, appendChild) are from legitimate DOM construction of the dropdown UI, not exfiltration or injection outside declared host_permissions. The iframe communication destination () is the publisher's own first-party domain, not a third party. No obfuscation, no external data exfiltration, no remote code loading.
