What our analysis found
Zotero Connector, used by 8,000,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. Its permissions mean it can inject scripts into pages and can observe network requests. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in October 2026.
The extension is a legitimate, open-source reference management tool from a trusted publisher (, featured, 8M+ users). All permissions serve core functionality: proxy redirection, page scraping, attachment downloading, and Google Docs integration. Network requests go exclusively to Zotero's own API () and the user's Zotero desktop client; no third-party tracking or data leaks were found. The ML model's permission-based risk flags are expected for a browser extension that needs broad access to inject code, read cookies, and modify headers to detect and interact with academic proxies. The optional error reporting is transparent and user-controlled.
