What our analysis found
Samurai Anime Boy Koi in Sword Live Wallpaper, used by 1,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in October 2026.
Analyst notes
The complete code surface is four JS files, one HTML and one CSS, and all were reviewed: was omitted from the bundle by the analyzer's own vendor SKIP_PATTERNS (code_extract.py:168), so I pulled it from the corpus CRX and it is byte-identical to the official jQuery release (sha256 fc9a93dd241f6b045cbff0481cf4e1901becd0e12fb45166a8f17f95823f0b1a), leaving no unreviewed code. The extension does exactly what its Art & Design listing claims: a looping MP4 wallpaper newtab with a clock, sticky notes, a shortcut grid and a search box that delegates to the user's own default engine via chrome.search.query (:169). There are no content scripts, no access, no outbound POST, and no data leaves the browser; the only two network calls are GETs to the publisher's own declared host [domain withheld], and the bundled manifest matches the published CWS manifest exactly. The permhash cluster's 33% malware rate and the malext-feed note (whose own basis line says it is not a code review, and which my notes record as having contaminated labels) are the strongest contradicting signals, but nothing in the code corroborates them. The one genuine weakness, kept out of findings because it is neither unauthorized nor code-executing, is that:54 assigns unsanitized server-supplied HTML from [domain withheld] into the newtab's innerHTML and:95-105 templates server-supplied shortcut URLs into markup: the default MV3 extension-page CSP (script-src 'self', no CSP override in the manifest) blocks script tags, inline handlers and javascript: hrefs, so the publisher can change what the newtab displays but cannot run code there. Hygiene issues only::75-88 references an undefined popupContainer and throws, and:28 overwrites the user's saved shortcuts with the server list.
