What our analysis found
Nature Extension, used by 10,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in August 2022.
Analyst notes
The source code does exactly what the description advertises: a new tab page with nature backgrounds, local weather via OpenWeatherMap (the only declared host_permission), top sites shortcuts, and a Bing-powered search bar via a search affiliate ([domain withheld], which is disclosed in the listing as 'powered by Bing'). All geolocation data is cached locally in chrome.storage and only the coordinates are forwarded to [domain withheld]. No data exfiltration, remote code loading, obfuscation, or content-script injection was found. The ML score and permhash cluster (33% malicious) are corroborated by the publisher's 100% malicious rate on other extensions — the primary unresolved concern — but nothing in this extension's actual code materialises that concern.
