Analyst notes
Version 2.1.2 is an ordinary new-tab wallpaper page: (lines 393-406) loads jQuery, jQuery-UI, Bootstrap, Popper, TweenMax, SweetAlert, Font Awesome () plus five small first-party scripts, and there is not a single outbound network call in any application code. topSites is consumed locally: sends a runtime message,:60 calls chrome.topSites.get and returns the list to the page, which renders it as favicon tiles; nothing transmits it anywhere. The malext-feed label contradicts the code and self-describes as "not an independent code review" with "No affected version supplied", and the published-manifest "mismatch" is not a mismatch at all: permissions [search] plus host_permissions [domain withheld] belong to version 3.5.0 (verified against the stored My41LjA archive), not to the 2.1.2 bundle under review. The 12% malware rate in the permhash cluster and the High risk-engine score both derive from the topSites permission alone, which this code uses for exactly its advertised "Popular Shortcuts / Most visited" feature; chrome-stats ( impact, likelihood, trusted publisher) and the publisher's 1% leave-one-out malicious rate agree with the code.
