On every chrome.runtime.onInstalled event (reason install, update or chrome_update; listener at -254) the service worker beacons a base64-wrapped payload — extension id, version, event reason, timestamp and a persistent UUID generated at -281 and stored in chrome.storage.local — to [domain withheld], then navigates the user to any URL the server returns via chrome.tabs.create. This is a remotely controlled navigation channel: the operator can open an arbitrary page (affiliate, ad, or phishing destination) in the user's browser at will, re-armable on each browser update, and nothing in the extension's stated color-picking purpose requires it. The persistent-identifier telemetry is also undisclosed — the CWS listing declares no data collection and the publisher-level privacy policy is a generic [domain withheld] page, and the same payload is additionally attached to setUninstallURL at -244.

Analyst notes

The picker itself is clean ( is jQuery plus a ~60-line module at -4310; and the recovered are with zero outbound network calls), but:210-232 implements an undisclosed beacon to [domain withheld] carrying a persistent generated UID ( -281) and then calls chrome.tabs.create({url: e.url}) on whatever URL the server answers with — a recurring, server-directed tab-open primitive (chrome.runtime.onInstalled at fires on install, update and chrome_update), not a one-off welcome page; the same base64 payload is also bound to setUninstallURL ( -244) while the CWS disclosure says 'none declared' and the publisher privacy policy points at a generic Google page. Every ML regex hit resolves to vendored libraries (the 4 js_eval_function / 12 fromCharCode / XHR hits are lodash's new Function("return this"), keyboard handling and jQuery's ajax transport; are React DOM), so the ML score is not independently corroborated by the code, and the 100%-malicious permhash cluster plus 'publisher flagged malicious (confidence=None)' appear to derive from the same feed label as the [domain withheld] note rather than independent evidence — notably grep -ril whatsapp over the full package returns nothing, so the cited WhatsApp-spamware article does not describe this code. The analysis bundle was also missing (1.0 MB, listed in); I recovered and reviewed it from the stored CRX ([domain withheld]) before deciding. Hygiene-only: the chrome.webRequest.onHeadersReceived listener at -148 on *://*/* is a no-op passthrough registered without 'blocking', so under MV3 it cannot modify traffic and the webRequest permission is simply unjustified; the notification title 'Color Picker Tool - Geco' () indicates cloned code, matching the 'rip off of another color picker' reviews.
