What our analysis found

React Developer Tools, used by 6,000,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. Its permissions mean it can read and change data on all websites and can inject scripts into pages. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in September 2026.

The extension is the official React Developer Tools by Meta (Facebook), a trusted publisher. The source code matches the expected functionality: it injects a debugging hook into pages, communicates between the devtools panel and content scripts via postMessage and chrome.runtime APIs, and uses permissions (scripting, tabs, storage, <all_urls>) solely for inspecting React component hierarchies. No external data exfiltration, credential theft, or unauthorized collection is present. The ML model’s high-risk indicators (e.g., innerHTML, eval, fromCharCode) are artifacts of Webpack bundling and minification; the permhash cluster’s 6% malware rate is low and not indicative. The third-party risk likelihood is 0, and the publisher is featured with a valid privacy policy. The optional clipboardWrite permission is used only for copying element paths, as disclosed. Therefore, the ML flag is a false positive.

About this extension

Adds React debugging tools to the Chrome Developer Tools. Created from revision 1d34f91dfd.

Read the publisher’s full description

React Developer Tools is a Chrome DevTools extension for the open-source React JavaScript library. It allows you to inspect the React component hierarchies in the Chrome Developer Tools. You will get two new tabs in your Chrome DevTools: "Components ⚛" and "Profiler ⚛". The Components tab shows you the root React components that were rendered on the page, as well as the subcomponents that they ended up rendering. By selecting one of the components in the tree, you can inspect and edit its current props and state in the panel on the right. In the breadcrumbs you can inspect the selected component, the component that created it, the component that created that one, and so on. If you inspect a React element on the page using the regular Elements tab, then switch over to the React tab, that element will be automatically selected in the React tree. The Profiler tab allows you to record performance information. This extension requires permissions to access the page's React tree, but it does not transmit any data remotely. It is fully open source, and you can find its source code at https://github.com/facebook/react/tree/main/packages/react-devtools-extensions.
