What our analysis found
Startpage — Private Search Engine, used by 200,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in May 2025.
Analyst notes
The extension solely interacts with Startpage's own domains to set the default search engine and perform install attribution via custom headers on first-party requests. No user personal data is collected or sent to third parties; all communication is with *.[domain withheld], the publisher's website. The webRequest permission is used only to augment requests to Startpage, not to intercept or monitor unrelated traffic. The manifest version 2 with webRequest is safe for its intended purpose, though the CWS listing suggests a newer MV3 version. The ML model's risk assessment is based on over-permissioning typical of search engine extensions, not on malicious code.
