What our analysis found
MP3 Converter is rated caution by Extension Auditor. Our code review reported 2 findings (2 high), led by data exfiltration. It comes from a publisher with 2 extensions and was last updated in June 2025.
Key findings
- High
Data Exfiltration
User-supplied URLs are exfiltrated to `[domain withheld]`, a generic Hostinger VPS with no named domain or disclosed identity. The CWS listing explicitly declares 'none' for data collection while every URL the user pastes (which may reveal private media links, authenticated S3 URLs, or internal network resources) is transmitted to this third-party backend. The destination is unrelated to the publisher's own site ([domain withheld]) and no privacy policy explains what the server does with submitted URLs.
- High
Unauthorized Data Collection
The full binary content of every user-selected file (MP4, MOV, WAV, M4A) is uploaded to `[domain withheld]` — a server with no disclosed identity, retention policy, or privacy agreement. The CWS listing declares no data collection; uploading file contents to an undisclosed third-party server directly contradicts this. Combined with a publisher whose sole other extension is flagged malicious, this backend is highly suspect as a data harvesting endpoint masquerading as a conversion service.
Analyst notes
The extension silently uploads user-supplied files and arbitrary URLs to an opaque Hostinger VPS (`[domain withheld]`) while the CWS listing declares zero data collection and markets the tool as doing conversion 'right in Chrome' with 'no installations or sign-ups' — an active misrepresentation. This destination is a generic server ID with no associated domain, privacy policy, or disclosure; it is unrelated to the publisher's own Tilda landing page. The publisher's only other extension is flagged 100% malicious, corroborating the ML signal rather than contradicting it. The ML score (0.52) and chrome-stats likelihood flags (low user count, recent creation) all point the same direction.
