Other
The bundled manifest (confirmed genuine via: item_id lbodmgalkckmanohgjenceliohnodbne, item_version 1.1.2) requests only with no host_permissions, while the live Chrome Web Store listing for this extension declares permissions ["search"] and host_permissions ["[domain withheld]"]. No file in the signed package calls chrome.search or contacts [domain withheld], so that capability is exercised by code I could not review; chrome-stats independently reports [domain withheld] domain access, indicating the listing summary is real and not a scrape artifact. A `search` permission combined with a publisher-controlled backend API on a wallpaper new-tab extension is the standard search-redirect monetization pattern, which this review cannot rule out.
Analyst notes
The bundled, CWS-signed 1.1.2 package is clean: every JS file is local-only new-tab UI ( plus,,,,,), there is no anywhere outside vendor code, topSites data () is rendered into the page and never transmitted (only the domain reaches Google's s2 favicon endpoint), and the ML's ('script') hits all live in, and, three chunks that never loads. The one thing this review cannot clear is that the live CWS listing declares permissions ["search"] and host_permissions ["[domain withheld]"], neither of which exists in the signed 1.1.2 manifest I read, and chrome-stats independently corroborates [domain withheld] host access — so the package users actually run differs from the code available to me. The malext-feed label and the 12% permhash-cluster malware rate are not independent evidence and did not drive this call.
