What our analysis found

Google Mail Checker, used by 2,000,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in July 2024.

The extension is an official Google Gmail checker that simply fetches the unread count via a legacy Atom feed from and updates a badge. All permissions are necessary for its declared functionality: alarms for periodic updates, to detect Gmail navigation, and *. to access the feed. No data collection or exfiltration occurs; the outbound request is to the expected endpoint with a cache-busting parameter. The ML model's feature matching (e.g., xmlhttprequest, get requests) is consistent with normal behavior, and the third-party risk score's impact reasons are inherent to the extension's purpose. The publisher is a trusted Google entity with a long history and high user rating.
