What our analysis found
Google Analytics Debugger, used by 500,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. Its permissions mean it can read and change data on all websites. It was last updated in December 2024.
This is a legitimate developer tool published by Google Analytics. The code merely redirects Google Analytics script requests to official debug versions on Google-owned domains and adds a debug cookie — exactly its stated purpose. Broad permissions (webRequest, webRequestBlocking, all URLs) are essential for intercepting analytics requests across all sites. No data exfiltration, unauthorized collection, or third‑party communication occurs. The ML model overfits on the dangerous permission combination, which is intrinsic to the extension’s function. A manifest mismatch with the live CWS listing (v2 vs v3) exists, but the analyzed bundle shows no malicious behaviour.
