What our analysis found
Free VPN, used by 100,000 people, is rated caution by Extension Auditor. Our code review reported 2 findings (2 high), led by tracking. Its permissions mean it can read and change data on all websites.
Key findings
- High
Tracking
The extension loads a 1x1 tracking pixel from a third-party domain ([domain withheld]) on its backup connection manager page. This domain is not disclosed in the extension's privacy policy or purpose, potentially tracking users without consent.
- High
Privilege Escalation
A message handler in the service worker allows a web page on freevpn.one to disable any other extension via the management API without direct user interaction. This grants the web page excessive control over the browser and could be exploited to disable security tools or competitors.
Analyst notes
The extension provides VPN functionality using necessary permissions and communicates with its own domain (freevpn.one). However, it includes a hidden tracking pixel from a third-party domain ([domain withheld]) in an extension page, which may collect user data without clear disclosure. Additionally, the extension allows a web page on freevpn.one to disable other installed extensions via the management API without explicit user consent, posing a privilege escalation risk.
