What our analysis found

Dark Reader, used by 7,000,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. Its permissions mean it can read and change data on all websites and can inject scripts into pages. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in September 2026.

The extension is the well-known open-source 'Dark Reader' with 7 million users. Its broad host permissions, scripting, and early execution are necessary for applying dark themes to all websites and preventing flash of white. All network communication is limited to internal extension messaging (chrome.runtime.sendMessage); no external data exfiltration, tracking, or malicious code was found. The codebase is but clearly serves the stated purpose, and the privacy policy confirms no data collection.

You may see news about Dark Reader in the settings popup. There are Developer Tools for experienced users. Dark Reader doesn't show ads and doesn't send users' data anywhere.
