Suspicious in code review (v1.2.1)
Our reviewer found behaviour consistent with malware in version 1.2.1, but not enough to confirm it. Treat this extension as untrusted until it has been re-reviewed.
What our analysis found
Fortnite Breakpoint Live Wallpaper is rated caution by Extension Auditor. Our code review reported 2 findings (1 high, 1 medium), led by other. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in October 2026.
Key findings
- High
Other
The bundled contains no `host_permissions` field at all, but the live CWS listing's published manifest declares `host_permissions: ["[domain withheld]"]`. This divergence means the extension's actual installed network surface differs from what the submitted ZIP contains — a pattern seen when publishers push a delayed-malicious manifest update after CWS review passes on the clean bundle. There is no corresponding `fetch` or `XMLHttpRequest` to [domain withheld] in any of the bundled JS files, so the permission has been declared without matching code visible here.
- Medium
Other
On every install, the extension opens a tab to [domain withheld] with a UTM campaign tagged `bmwm4+neon` — clearly copied from a different extension (a BMW M4 Neon wallpaper). The CWS listing claims this is a Fortnite extension and the description mentions SpongeBob wallpapers. This template-farming pattern — same re-skinned across many listings — is common infrastructure for newtab hijacking operations and indicates the publisher is mass-producing extensions from a shared codebase, some of which (, 1%) are confirmed malicious.
Analyst notes
The bundled code itself is a standard newtab extension with no outbound network calls, no data exfiltration, and no obfuscated logic — but the live CWS listing's manifest includes `host_permissions: ["[domain withheld]"]` that is completely absent from the bundled ZIP, a concrete mismatch consistent with a staged or already-pushed update adding external API capability not yet visible in this bundle. Additionally, fires a UTM campaign labeled `bmwm4+neon` (a BMW wallpaper extension) on install of a supposed Fortnite extension, and the CWS description still references "SpongeBob wallpapers" — clear evidence of low-quality template farming where the same base extension is re-skinned and re-published under different names. Chrome-stats marks the publisher as trusted with low scores, which partially contradicts the ML score of 0.48, but does not explain the host_permissions discrepancy.
