What our analysis found
Cat Cursor ♥ Custom Cursor for Chrome™, used by 2,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. Its permissions mean it can read and change data on all websites. It comes from a publisher with 20 extensions and was last updated in November 2025.
Analyst notes
All three supplied JS files implement exactly what the listing describes: let the user pick a bundled.cur thumbnail, rasterize it to a canvas data-URL (:61-75) and store it in chrome.storage.local, and injects a single <style> element setting `cursor: url(dataURL)` (:20-34). There are zero network sinks in any supplied JS (no, no), the only permission is `storage`, and the bundled manifest matches the published CWS summary exactly; the only outbound URLs are the publisher's own [domain withheld] (install tab at:16-18, uninstall URL at, 'Get More Cursors' link at:591) and a Google Fonts stylesheet. This contradicts the 0.77 ML score and the 45% publisher-malicious rate (which likely derives from the same Unit IoC import that produced this extension's own IoC note, so it is not independent corroboration); the Unit 42 'adware or PUP' listing is most plausibly about the [domain withheld] landing page itself, which is server-side and unverifiable from code. Held at likely_benign rather than false_positive because jquery. is referenced by the popup (:8,597) but was not included in the bundle, so one popup-scope code file could not be read.
