What our analysis found
Audio & Voice Recorder, used by 70,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. Our code review reported 2 findings (1 high, 1 medium), led by other. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in May 2025.
Key findings
- High
Other
The bundled manifest requests broader permissions (identity, wildcard hosts) than the live CWS listing, which shows only specific hosts (paywall.atst.tools, clerk.atst.tools) and cookies. This discrepancy could mislead users about the extension's capabilities.
- Medium
Unauthorized Data Collection
The extension collects the user's email and profile via Google OAuth (through chrome.identity.launchWebAuthFlow) and sends it to Firebase authentication services, but the CWS listing declares no data collection ('none declared'). This unauthorized collection should be disclosed in the privacy practices.
Analyst notes
The extension is a legitimate audio recorder using tabCapture and downloads. Its permissions (identity, storage, tabCapture, downloads) are necessary for core functionality. The background script uses Firebase Auth for premium features and all audio processing occurs locally. No data exfiltration, network interception, or code injection was found. The broad host_permissions are unused and pose no immediate threat. The extension's ML risk score is 0.00, and its permhash cluster contains no malware flags, corroborating benign intent. The manifest mismatch and undisclosed OAuth data collection are compliance issues, not indicators of malice.
