Unsplash Instant, used by 60,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in April 2026.
Analyst notes
(760 lines, the extension's only script) is a clean, readable new-tab wallpaper app: it fetches a random photo from [domain withheld] (js:17-26), paints it as a CSS background, renders metadata with textContent, and on user click downloads urls.full via chrome.downloads (js:512). There is no, no content script, no worker, no remote code, no obfuscation, and pins `script-src 'self'` with connect-src limited to [domain withheld], [domain withheld] and [domain withheld] — the host_permissions and CSP are mutually consistent and minimal. Publisher reputation contradicts the ML score (Google trusted-publisher badge on both extension and publisher, valid, privacy policy on [domain withheld], destination domains == publisher domain); the chrome-stats likelihood is driven solely by 'removed-from-store', which contradicts the listing's `active` status and says nothing about the code; the permhash cluster is only 7% flagged, so it weakly corroborates at best. The published-manifest summary shows manifest_version 2 while the bundle is MV3, but that summary carries no to compare and is stale listing metadata from before the 4.x MV3 rewrite — not a permission mismatch. Hygiene only: the GA4 telemetry is not reflected in the CWS data-collection disclosure ('none declared'), though it carries no PII.
