What our analysis found
SmoothScroll, used by 100,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. Its permissions mean it can inject scripts into pages. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in September 2024.
SmoothScroll is a well-known extension with a legitimate purpose. The source code shows no data exfiltration, network interception, or tracking. All network activity (uninstall URL, promotional tab opens) is directed to the publisher's own domains (). The commented-out Image pings to are permanently disabled. The ML model's pattern hits (innerHTML, appendChild, base64) arise from benign UI code (options page version display, clearfix element, SVG icons). The manifest mismatch (bundled v2 vs. published v3) is a version difference, not an indication of malicious intent; the extension is a 'false positive' in the ML risk model.
