Kasane Teto Live Wallpaper, used by 1,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in July 2026.
Analyst notes
All source files are fully readable, contain no obfuscation, and do exactly what the listing describes: a new-tab page with an animated video wallpaper, a clock, shortcuts, and a search bar. The only outbound network references are Google Fonts (CDN, standard), Google's favicon service (standard shortcut icon fetching), and [domain withheld] promotional UTM links on — a well-known affiliate marketing pattern, not data exfiltration. No user data is transmitted anywhere; shortcuts and preferences are stored in localStorage only. The ML score of 0.20 was almost certainly triggered by newtab override + search permission, which is common across the entire class of new-tab extensions (both benign and malicious), explaining the 3% malware rate in the permhash cluster without implicating this specific extension.
