HP Network Check Launcher, used by 600,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. It comes from a publisher with 14 extensions and was last updated in August 2021.
Analyst notes
The extension leverages webNavigation and nativeMessaging solely to detect offline errors and launch HP’s on-device Network Check tool. All data (tab URLs) is sent exclusively to the local native host 'com.hp.network.check' and never to external servers. The content script injection is superfluous but harmless; no data is collected or exfiltrated. The ML model likely over-indexed on broad permissions and content script patterns, but the actual code shows no malicious behavior.
