FileShot is a privacy‑first file sharing extension that helps you upload and share files quickly—optionally with zero‑knowledge encryption—directly from your browser. It adds one‑click uploads, right‑click sharing shortcuts, screenshot capture, and page media discovery so you can create share links fast without leaving what you’re doing. Key features Fast upload → instant share link: Upload one file or multiple files and get a share link immediately. Optional zero‑knowledge encryption: Encrypt files locally on your device before upload so the server stores encrypted data, not plaintext. Right‑click actions (context menu): Share common actions from the browser’s context menu when supported. Screenshot capture & sharing: Capture screenshots (including selection capture where supported) and upload them as share links. Page media tools: Scan the current page for media assets (images/videos) when available and help you download/share them. Clipboard and notifications: One‑click copy link and clear status notifications for uploads. Security and encryption FileShot supports privacy‑focused sharing with client‑side encryption. When encryption is enabled, your file is encrypted locally before it leaves your device. FileShot supports two secure access approaches: Key-in-link sharing A strong random key is generated locally. The key is placed in the URL fragment (the portion after #), which is not sent to the server in normal web requests. Anyone with the full link can decrypt and download. Password/passphrase protection You set a password. The encryption key is derived locally from your password. The share link does not include a raw key fragment. Recipients must have the password to decrypt. Important: if you enable password mode, FileShot does not receive your password as plaintext. Compatibility Browsers: Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers that support Manifest V3 (e.g., Edge, Brave). Operating systems: Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS. Files: Any file type you can select in the browser file picker can be uploaded. Permissions and why they’re needed FileShot requests permissions to provide its browser-integrated features: activeTab / scripting: Only interacts with the current tab when you use features like capture or page analysis. contextMenus: Adds right‑click shortcuts. downloads: Enables reliable download behavior for supported workflows. storage: Saves your settings (e.g., preferences, expiration, optional password UI state). notifications: Shows upload completion/error feedback. clipboardWrite: Lets you copy share links with one click. tabs / permissions / sidePanel: Supports controlled UI and optional permission flows depending on the browser. Default site access is scoped to FileShot endpoints (such as fileshot.io and api.fileshot.io). Some features may request additional access only when you explicitly use them. Responsible use Only upload or download content you own or have permission to use. Some platforms use short‑lived signed URLs; if a link expires, re-run the tool to refresh it.
