What our analysis found
Equalizer with Volume Booster - Equalizer, used by 10,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. It comes from a trusted publisher and was last updated in September 2026.
Analyst notes
The source code clearly implements a legitimate audio equalizer: orchestrates tab capture via chrome.tabCapture, and route the captured audio stream through a 10-band Web Audio API filter chain ( + pitch shifter), and are standard React bundles that render the UI. No network requests exfiltrate user data anywhere — the only outbound URLs are redirects to [domain withheld] (standard affiliate marketing) and display links to the publisher's own [domain withheld] domain. The ML model's elevated score is fully explained by the React bundle inflating js_innerhtml, js_appendchild, js_fromcharcode, and js_appendchild counters, plus the large and audio libraries inflating js_file_count and total_js_size_bytes; none of these indicate actual malice. The permhash cluster's 22% malicious rate and the publisher's 60% malicious sibling extension rate are concerning reputation signals, but they are contradicted by the clean code — zero data exfiltration, no obfuscation, no payload loading from remote sources.
