What our analysis found
Avast SecureLine VPN, used by 60,000 people, showed no malicious code in Extension Auditor's review. Our code review reported 1 finding (1 high), led by other. Its permissions mean it can read and change data on all websites, can inject scripts into pages and can observe network requests.
Key findings
- High
Other
The bundled manifest requests significantly broader permissions than the published Chrome Web Store listing (which lists only storage, nativeMessaging, privacy, management, alarms, and specific host access to [domain withheld]). This discrepancy could mislead users about the extension's actual capabilities and access scope. While the permissions may be required for VPN and ad-blocking features, the listing is not transparent.
Analyst notes
The extension is published by a trusted security company (Gen Digital), with a legitimate purpose (VPN control for Avast SecureLine) and permissions necessary for VPN and ad blocking features. The ML risk score is low (0.00) and the permhash cluster shows 0% malware. No malicious code patterns were observed in the available files, and the published privacy policy covers the disclosed data collection. The only issue is a mismatch between the bundled and published manifest permissions, which is a transparency concern but does not indicate malpractice.

Easily turn your Avast SecureLine VPN on and off, or change your server location, from the comfort of your browser.
Read the publisher’s full description
The Avast SecureLine VPN Web Extension is a simple browser application that allows you to control your Avast SecureLine VPN easier and faster from your browser toolbar. One click, and you can turn your VPN on or off, or change where you’re connecting from to give you a perfectly seamless privacy experience. Please note that this is not a stand-alone VPN product. It requires Avast SecureLine VPN to be installed on your PC, which must be activated with a valid license. But once you get that going, then it’ll be good to go. Not sure what a VPN is? A VPN (or virtual private network) is like a secure tunnel that hides you when you browse. Normally when you connect online, everything you’re doing can be seen by whoever else is on the network, and your location and other personal information can be tracked. But when you connect with a VPN, your data is encrypted and your location is hidden, allowing you to use public wi-fi fearlessly and access websites and content that might be censored or geo-locked. Why Avast SecureLine VPN? ● Powerful, fast connection: Unlike other VPNs, Avast SecureLine VPN is optimized for performance, which means you’ll never have to choose between privacy and speed. ● 256-bit encryption: We use the same technology used by banks to keep their data safe to secure your connection to the internet. ● Worldwide selection: We offer 54 servers in 34 countries, giving you all the options you need… and then some. ● Hidden even to us: we don’t track the apps you use, the websites you visit or the content you consume, period. If someone asks, we just can’t answer. For private browsing no matter what you do or where you go, there’s no better choice.
